General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation
Sharan Burrow is the first woman to be elected General Secretary of the ITUC. She was previously Senior Vice President of the NSW Teachers’ Federation and became President of the Australian Education Union in 1992. From 1995 to 2000 she was Vice-president of Education International, representing 24 million members worldwide. In 2000, she became the second woman President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, and the first woman President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions Asia Pacific Region Organization. She was a member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization and the Stakeholder Council of the Global Reporting Initiative.
